What is Medicare Part A?

Denver Medicare Part A is part of the basic Medicare program that helps cover the cost of inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care. It is sometimes also called Hospital Insurance.

What is included in Medicare Part A?

Coverage under Medicare Part A includes:

Inpatient Hospital Stays

Skilled Nursing Facility Care

Hospice Care

Some Home Health Care

Medicare Part A does not cover everything. For example, Part A does not cover custodial care, such as help with activities of daily living, nor does it cover long-term care in a nursing home.

Medicare Part A Eligibility

Medicare is available for:

  • People age 65 and older
  • Those below 65 years old with certain disabilities
  • Those with end-stage renal disease

Those already receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board benefits will be automatically enrolled.

Medicare Part A Enrollment Period

The Medicare Part A Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) lasts for 7 months, starting 3 months before you turn 65 and ending 3 months after the month you turn 65.

For example, if you turn 65 on September 1st, your IEP would start on June 1st and end on December 31st.

Special Enrollment Period

You may also be able to enroll in Medicare Part A during a Special Enrollment Period (SEP). SEPs are for people who have certain life changes, such as losing their employer-sponsored health insurance.

Missed your Initial Enrollment Period?

If you miss your IEP, you may enroll in Medicare Part A during the General Enrollment Period (GEP). The GEP runs from January 1st to March 31st each year. Your coverage starts the month after you sign up. You might pay a monthly late enrollment penalty if you don’t qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.

Contact MK for Questions or Help with Enrollment.

Medicare Part A Penalty

Those who qualify for premium-free Part A will not pay a Part A late enrollment penalty if you decide to enroll after your Initial Enrollment Period. If you are not eligible for premium-free Part A and you don’t enroll during your IEP your premium may go up.

Cost of Medicare Part A

Premium Free Part A

Most people will not have to pay for Part A. If you or your spouse paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years (40 quarters throughout your working life), you will not have to pay a premium for Part A.

Part A Premium

Those who do not qualify for premium-free Part A can purchase it for a monthly premium. The cost will depend on how long you or your spouse paid Medicare taxes and will vary from year to year.

Those with premium-free Part A will still have a deductible and coinsurance for some Part A services. Contact MK for more information on deductibles and benefit periods.
